Busan — Sea, Sashimi, and Busan-style Bluntness

Busan is a completely different city from Seoul. The people, the food, even the dialect. Mountains rise between neighborhoods and the sea spreads out at the edge, so one subway stop changes the entire scenery. Among foreign travelers who come to Korea more than once, Busan is the most-recommended "where next?"

What kind of city it is

Korea's second city, population 3.3 million. A port city + a mountain city + a resort city, mixed together. Reachable from Seoul in 2.5 hours by KTX — perfect for a 1-night, 2-day trip. Foreigner-friendly with a linear layout, so it's hard to get lost.

Must-visit spots

• 🌊 Haeundae Beach — Busan = Haeundae. Cafés, hotels, and high-rises lined behind the sand, with Gwangan Bridge in the distance. Summer is packed; other seasons are quiet.
• 🌉 Gwangalli + Gwangan Bridge — quieter than Haeundae with better cafés. Gwangan Bridge at night is Busan's signature view.
• 🎨 Gamcheon Culture Village — colorful houses stacked on a mountainside. Instagram hotspot. Has its own page.
• 🐟 Jagalchi + Gukje + Kkangtong markets — the Busan market trifecta. Sashimi, eel, seed-stuffed hotteok.
• ⛪ Huinnyeoul Culture Village + Yeongdo — alleys on cliffs over the sea. Filming location for the movie "The Attorney."
• 🦘 Taejongdae — a cliff park at the end of Yeongdo. Loop it on the Danubi train.

Food — where Busan really shines

• Dwaeji-gukbap (pork-rice soup) — Busan's soul. Iconic places like Suyeong Bonjeon, Hapcheon Ilryu, Songjeong 3-Dae. Season to taste with shrimp paste and chopped chili.
• Milmyeon (wheat noodles) — Busan's take on naengmyeon. Wheat-flour noodles in cold broth. Gaya, Naeho are classics.
• Seed hotteok — sweet pancake with a spoonful of nuts. 1,500 won at markets.
• Sashimi (hwe) — Jagalchi Market. Pick at a stall, eat upstairs with a small "table charge" added.
• Kkomjangae (grilled hagfish) — Jagalchi and Gijang specialty. Spicy grilled.
• Busan-style bibim dangmyeon — a market-stall regular.

Getting there

• KTX: Seoul to Busan, about 2.5 hours (easiest, around 60,000 won)
• Air: Gimpo ↔ Gimhae, 1 hour. With airport transfers it's similar to KTX overall.
• Express bus: about 4.5 hours, the cheapest (around 30,000 won)
• Local transit: 4 subway lines. Haeundae and Donghae lines go straight to the beach. T-money works just like in Seoul.

Suggested route (1 night, 2 days)

• Day 1 — Arrive at Busan Station → Jagalchi Market lunch → Yeongdo and Huinnyeoul → Gamcheon Culture Village → Gwangalli night view + sashimi
• Day 2 — Morning walk at Haeundae → Dongbaek Island and Nurimaru APEC House → Lunch (dwaeji-gukbap) → KTX back

Season by season

• 🌸 Spring (Mar–May) — camellia + cherry blossoms. Dongbaek Island at Haeundae is the real camellia spot
• ☀️ Summer — beach + Gwangalli Fireworks Festival (early Oct is also great). But it's packed.
• 🍁 Autumn — the most pleasant. The recommended season for foreign visitors.
• ❄️ Winter — peak season for sashimi and seafood. The sea is cold but markets and cafés are at their best.

Honest tips

• The Busan dialect is strong. It surprises Korean-language learners more than it surprises English speakers — they'll just answer you in standard Korean.
• Haeundae hotels are pricey. Stay in Gwangalli or Seomyeon and ride the subway to the beach.
• For the Gwangan Bridge night view, go to Marine City or the Gwangalli sand. Cafés on the Gwangalli side give more options.
• Jagalchi sashimi — touts are aggressive. Confirm the price first, or eat at the priced restaurants nearby instead.
• During the Busan International Film Festival (early October), the city buzzes — hotels get hard to book.
