Gyeongju — City of a Thousand Years, Korea's Outdoor Museum
Gyeongju is a travel destination completely different from other cities. The entire city is a place where 1,000 years of history of the Silla Dynasty are buried. Tombs rise like grassy hills everywhere, 7th-century temples and observatories are preserved, and cafes and hanok (traditional Korean houses) are mixed in every alley. When introduced to foreign travelers as "Korea's Kyoto," it almost always works.
What kind of place is it?
A small city located on the east coast of Gyeongsangbuk-do. It was the thousand-year capital of Silla (57 BC ~ 935 AD). Grand royal tombs, temples (Bulguksa, Seokguram), an observatory (Cheomseongdae), and Anapji (pond garden) are scattered throughout and on the outskirts of the city, with many UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Must-visit places

Honest Tips
- Anapji (Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond) night view is best within an hour after sunset. If there are too many people, there might be a waiting line for entry.
- Combine Bulguksa and Seokguram on the same day (efficient taxi/bus route). However, Seokguram is on a mountain, so allow plenty of time.
- Hwangnam-ppang vs. Chalbori-ppang vs. Gyeongju-ppang — All similar, but only one main branch. If buying as a gift, buy from the main branch.
- Wearing a bicycle helmet is not common, but recommended for safety.
- Hanbok rental — Available in various places in the city. Hanbok against the backdrop of hanok and royal tombs makes for great photos.
- Accommodation is either Hwangnidan-gil or Bomun Tourist Complex. Hwangnidan-gil is in the heart of the city, Bomun is resort-style by the lake.
