The 30th Muju Firefly Festival will be held for nine days, from September 4 (Fri) to September 12 (Sat), 2026, in the area around Hanpungru-ro 326-17, Muju-eup, Muju-gun, Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province (including Muju Arts & Culture Center, Deungnamu Sports Complex, Namdaecheon River, and firefly habitats). While admission to the festival grounds is free, all core firefly observation programs require advance online registration on a first-come, first-served basis, with no on-site registration. The Firefly Mystical Exploration program extends until September 20 (Sun), even after the festival concludes, so you can still participate in the exploration even if you miss the main festival period. This page summarizes booking methods, program fees and times, what to bring, and transportation.

Please note the following restrictions. Accompanying pets and the use of mobility aids like wheelchairs are restricted, and the program may be canceled in case of inclement weather. Mystical Exploration for foreigners is an exception, allowing on-site registration without prior booking, but a passport or alien registration card must be presented.
The required items are simple.
Reducing light is crucial for observation. The festival explicitly prohibits LED shoes that flash with every step, as they can disturb other participants' observations. For the same reason, turning off your phone screen and flash is beneficial for your and your group's observation experience. Weather conditions like rain or storms directly affect the visibility of fireflies, so on days with bad weather, it's better to lower your expectations or aim for a different session.
Inter-city shuttle buses can be booked via the Kakao T app (Go to 'See All Services' → 'Shuttle' → 'Local Festivals' → 'Muju Firefly Festival'). They operate for a total of 5 days, including Fri-Sun, on September 4~6 and September 11~12, departing from 21 stops across 13 regions nationwide.
Buses operate daily for round trips or one-way service to Jinam Park P2 Parking Lot within the festival grounds. Schedules and fares can be confirmed on the Kakao T app and the festival website.
Local shuttle buses run separately during the same 5 days, passing through the festival grounds, Taekwondowon, Bandi Land, and the Gucheondong accommodation complex. If you've booked accommodation in the Gucheondong area, you can leave your car and take this shuttle.
If traveling by private car, parking is available at 1723 Dangsan-ri, Muju-eup (Dangsan-gangbyeon-ro 32). After parking, visitors can take a shuttle bus to the event venue.
While the firefly exploration takes place in the evening, the festival grounds open from 10:00.
Fireflies are environmental indicator insects that only inhabit clean water and environments. The firefly habitats in the Muju County area are designated as natural monuments, and these habitats are the foundation upon which the festival has continued for 30 years. The primary purpose of fireflies emitting light is mating, and it also serves as a communication method to protect themselves from predators and signal danger. The flickering you see during the exploration is not mere illumination but a signal from the insects, making the rule to minimize artificial light both a matter of viewing etiquette and a way to increase observation success.
The period for observing fireflies in Muju is not limited to just one time. This year, the Unmunsan Firefly Mystical Exploration was held 10 times from June 3 to 14, and in September, the Mystical Exploration will reopen in conjunction with the festival. This means there are two windows of opportunity, marking both the beginning and end of summer.
Can I see fireflies at all if I go without a reservation? The Mystical Exploration, Bandi Starlight Picnic, and Ecological Expedition, which go into the habitats, do not offer on-site registration, so you cannot participate without a reservation. However, you can see live fireflies at the Bandi Theme Hall (₩5,000 per person), and foreigners can exceptionally use the foreigner-exclusive Mystical Exploration by registering on-site with a passport or alien registration card.
Is there a separate fee for children? For the Mystical Exploration and Bandi Starlight Picnic, adult and child fees are the same (₩20,000 and ₩10,000 respectively). Infants under 36 months are free but must have proof documents, and cannot occupy a seat during the Mystical Exploration.
What happens if it rains? The Mystical Exploration may be canceled due to inclement weather. Even if not canceled, rain or storms can affect the visibility of fireflies. Departure status and time changes will be communicated via text message in advance, so please check the contact information registered at the time of booking.
Can I still go on an exploration after the festival ends? Yes, it's possible. The Mystical Exploration continues until September 20, even after the festival closes (September 12), only taking a break on September 14 (Mon) and 15 (Tue). However, Kakao T inter-city shuttles only operate on September 4~6 and 11~12, so alternative transportation, such as a private car, will be needed afterward.
What does it mean to get a portion of the participation fee back? Participants in the Mystical Exploration receive one ₩10,000 Muju Love Gift Certificate per person. These can be collected from 17:00 on the day at the on-site departure situation room and are usable at the festival grounds and within Muju County. This means the actual cost per person is effectively ₩10,000.
Where and how do I book the shuttle bus? In the Kakao T app, go to 'See All Services' → 'Shuttle' → 'Local Festivals' → 'Muju Firefly Festival' to select your route and time, then book. Advance reservation is required, and schedules can be confirmed on the Kakao T app and the festival website.
